Hope to see you in KC!<\/em><\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long time ago\u2014I mean I was definitely in high school\u2014I saw the video for Living Colour\u2019s \u201cCult of Personality.\u201d This was before CM Punk and similar circumstances to that time I stayed up in a hotel room and marathoned a History Channel docuseries on the Romanov family (and how they got <em>capped<\/em> in a basement lolololololol): I don\u2019t remember where I was, it was probably a family vacation, and it left a major impression on me that I can\u2019t quite put my finger on. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Living Colour - Cult Of Personality (Official Video)\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7xxgRUyzgs0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s not totally true, I guess. I like guitarists doing wild stuff, the lead singer was cool and magnetic, and in my memory, Vernon Reid\u2019s fangers was bleeding. This appears to not be the case in the real video\u2014maybe it was <em>different<\/em> all-Black arena rock band with shredding guitars that I would\u2019ve believably seen on cable during the Bush administration\u2014but Vernon Reid still plays like the blood doesn\u2019t have to stay inside. The Romanov thing\u2019s easy to explain, too\u2014I was a European history nerd in high school, Russia was a mystery, and I didn\u2019t know you could just <em>kill<\/em> monarchs and be done with it. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See what blogging can do? Some people pay for therapy! This took two paragraphs. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Therapy is good and I wouldn\u2019t be who I am today without it).<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyway, some talking head\u2014this had to have been MTV or VH1, probably 2004, I\u2019m going to say it <em>wasn\u2019t<\/em> Hal Sparks but who can be sure\u2014said something like \u201cbesides Hendrix, what guitar heroes did Black people have?\u201d <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">20-odd years later, I wanna make sure no one ever thinks that. Whoever said that was (Michael Jackson voice) ignorant. You only need about two brain cells (rub \u2018em together real fast) to know Black Guitar Heroes. Still, for those who don\u2019t know: <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sister Rosetta Tharpe<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shout, Sister, Shout! Sister Rosetta Tharpe\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ii06ABCd9ww?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe we\u2019re not starting with the most obscure person. But your humble blogger, raised in a culture of Boomer redneck dads who wouldn\u2019t shut up about Hendrix\/Clapton\/SRV, didn\u2019t know about Sister Rosetta Tharpe until <em>well into my 20s<\/em>. Surf music and its cousin\u2014whatever that psychedelic, reverb-y, southwestern US desert guitar is. It\u2019s definitely got an expiration whenever I listen, but I love it. When Tarantino or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5EJdEdk9g2E\">the bad season of <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5EJdEdk9g2E\">True Detective<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5EJdEdk9g2E\"> puts some reverby guitar in the score<\/a>? I\u2019m like <em>hell yeah<\/em>. I\u2019ve listened to a The Chantays record, multiple times, <em>on purpose<\/em>. So yeah, I like Shana Cleveland\u2019s playing in La Luz. And hey cool, here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/therumpus.net\/2019\/03\/21\/wanted-needed-loved-shana-clevelands-grandmas-hats\/\">Shana Cleveland in cool litmag <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/therumpus.net\/2019\/03\/21\/wanted-needed-loved-shana-clevelands-grandmas-hats\/\">The Rumpus<\/a><\/em>!<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Aye Nako<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aye Nako on Audiotree Live (Full Session)\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/at4Um2cQWRI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know if they\u2019re still a band, but Aye Nako writes really cool music I would have been <em>insanely into<\/em> if I\u2019d gotten into them when they formed in 2010. Guitarists Mars Ganito and Jade Payne are never not doing something interesting, even if it\u2019s the middle of a verse. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ZULU<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zulu on Audiotree Live (Full Session)\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nscyxuW6jSg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This set went up on <em>Audiotree<\/em> a week or so ago. I\u2019m not as into hardcore as I was in high school\/college, but ZULU gets a nod for their young, gifted, and in-your-face vibe. Guitarists Dez Yusuf and Braxton Marcellous shred\u2014but can play smooth, too. <\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Seafoam Walls<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Seafoam Walls on Audiotree Live (Full Session)\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xo9-Jw-AWh4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hard pivot from hardcore<\/em>. I\u2019ve linked to Seafoam Walls before, but I <em>really<\/em> enjoy this band. Jayan Bertrand and Dion Kerr are so silky on guitar.
