That\u2019s what Slick Shoes feels like. Slick Shoes, who, yes. Got their name from that <em>Goonies<\/em> clip. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Goonies - Slick Shoes!\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y_klBNAzKIA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>Slick Shoes, as I\u2019ve said before, <a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/Slick-shoes-by-what-right-lyrics\">are anti-abortion religious freaks<\/a>. I assume that applies to more than just lead singer Ryan, anyway. Or whomever writes their lyrics, I assume Ryan, since he\u2019s the only constant member of the band. They had more members over their run than most Youth Groups. Ryan was, like, <em>slightly<\/em> a jerk to me at Warped Tour 2003, but I don\u2019t super fault him for that because the crowd for their set sucked. It doesn\u2019t help my memory of them, though. <\/p><p>These guys did have the Favorite Band Title Belt for a while\u2014they took more musical risks than MxPx and were degrees nastier. They never got as popular as MxPx, which I assume contributed to all the lineup changes. This record of theirs feels like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/shipwreckedsailor.substack.com\/p\/albums-i-loved-in-high-school-mxpx-345\">Slowly Going The Way Of The Buffalo<\/a><\/em> to me (both came out in 1998), in a way that\u2019s hard to explain beyond \u201cthey sound self-assured while still being punk.\u201d I expect have a few good times with this re-listen and then immediately go back to never thinking about them again. <\/p><p><strong>For Better For Worse<\/strong><\/p><p><em>Hell yeah, this is how you start a punk album<\/em>. Speedy palm muted guitar riff, catchy but yellable chorus, get out in under three minutes. I might actually enjoy this. <\/p><p><strong>East on Tracks<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;East On Tracks&quot; - Slick Shoes LIVE at The Observatory - OC, CA 4\/22\/2017\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HlzIEYUtBUQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>No delay pedals here! This was <em>before<\/em> Explosions In The Sky taught every mediocre guitarist to cheat on 32nd notes instead of developing a right wrist. Gah this song <em>rips<\/em>.<\/p><p>Fitting that the video I found is them playing in Orange County. The hotbed of SoCal fascism, it\u2019s a perfect spot for the Onward Christian Soldiers of punk bands. <\/p><p><strong>The Last Round<\/strong><\/p><p>The verse totally doesn\u2019t live up to the intro. Like at all. Deflating feeling, like when your gender reveal party burns down the forest behind the megachurch. <\/p><p><strong>Fool Me No More<\/strong><\/p><p>Cliche-ridden, stock riffs and progs. Punk bands in the 90s were always like \u201cyou don\u2019t know me.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Late Night Showing<\/strong><\/p><p>Musical tone and lyrical content mismatched, which isn\u2019t usually a big deal. Here it\u2019s kinda rough tho. Only adds to my perception that these are people who don\u2019t really know what\u2019s going on most of the time, like they\u2019re bringing baseball cleats to soccer practice, come on. <\/p><p><strong>Away With You<\/strong><\/p><p>Shades of things I would like later, here\u2014long, winding guitar intros, half time bridge, smug \u201cI\u2019ll be here when you\u2019re ready to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/shipwreckedsailor.substack.com\/p\/have-you-losers-ever-tried-being?utm_source=publication-search\">be<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/shipwreckedsailor.substack.com\/p\/have-you-losers-ever-tried-being?utm_source=publication-search\"> <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/shipwreckedsailor.substack.com\/p\/have-you-losers-ever-tried-being?utm_source=publication-search\">cool for once in your life<\/a><\/em>\u201d lyrics.  <\/p><p><strong>When Does It End?<\/strong><\/p><p>Opening drums rock. Also love the half time, riffy prechorus\u2014forgot about it and almost spit on my computer typing this sentence. I\u2019m back in, we\u2019re having fun again.<\/p><p><strong>Responsible<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Slick Shoes - Responsible - Live @ The Novo in Los Angeles 12\/16\/17\" width=\"790\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r64819gc-84?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>That harmonized guitar intro! Derisively yelling \u201cRESPONSIBILITY\u201d as the first lyric! That harmonized palm muted guitar solo! Hell yeah, that\u2019s how you appeal to 16-year-old Chris. <\/p><p><strong>Call for Ambulance<\/strong><\/p><p>Youth Group Christians are always telling people \u201cthere\u2019s still time to change\u201d but they really mean \u201ccome to this altar call.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>Fulfilling<\/strong><\/p><p>Pretty awful chorus and then <em>brutal<\/em>, <em>take a drill to my temple to get it out of my ears<\/em> hearing Ryan do a spoken word second verse. I had decent hopes after those intro chords, and now I\u2019ll need another 18 years of not listening to this band to get that second verse out of my mind. <\/p><p><strong>Clenched Fists, Black Eyes<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Clenched Fists, Black Eyes\" width=\"790\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JCtSra6wzAw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>This 7 Seconds cover makes me want to listen to 7 Seconds. <\/p><p>Why doesn\u2019t Slick Shoes yell TUBULAR in their version??!<\/p><p><strong>Parting Ways<\/strong><\/p><p>Yeah, we\u2019re back to doing cool things on both guitars. This chorus still gets stuck in my head. <\/p><p><strong>Learn To Unlearn<\/strong><\/p><p>The bonus outro here softens my stance on the whole album. What is that cover, Scorpions? I\u2019m downloading Shazam just to find out. <\/p><p>Goddamnit, Shazam just told me I was listening to \u201cLearn To Unlearn\u201d by Slick Shoes. <\/p><p><strong>What Scratches This Itch For Me Today:<\/strong><\/p><p>Nostalgia is embarrassing, because do you really like music or were you just happier when you were 16? One answer is depressing. The point of looking back at records I liked in high school is to see where I am today, too.<\/p><p>There\u2019s shades of what I\u2019d start to like, here. Which is kind of a way of saying I listen to better bands now. Slick Shoes probably led to <a href=\"https:\/\/shipwreckedsailor.substack.com\/p\/albums-i-loved-in-high-school-before?utm_source=publication-search\">Before Today<\/a>. Just because I expect them to be closet Trump voters doesn\u2019t mean I don\u2019t owe a little bit of debt to them.
