The new Shipwrecked Sailor album is here, have some liner notes<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Good morning, again. Would you like some new music this Friday? It\u2019s a Bandcamp Friday<\/a>, after all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new Shipwrecked Sailor album<\/a> is out now, and it is called Burgers or Tacos?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cband\u201d is me on guitars, bass, keys, and I programmed the drums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brendan Johnson engineered and produced Burgers or Tacos?<\/a><\/em> with some minor assists from me. This record wouldn\u2019t exist without Brendan\u2019s support, encouragement, and willingness to tell me both when something isn\u2019t working or when to push further. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album artwork is by K. Lago<\/a>\u2014who rocks\u2014and who is an artist, writer, and naturalist based in Chicago. Her work blends elements of dark comedy, folklore, Gothic horror, and natural history. Here is a third link to her website<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  7. Al Pastor with Cilantro & Onions<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  8. Beer-Battered Cod with Mango-Habanero Slaw<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  9. Grilled Shrimp with Pico de Gallo & Lime<\/p><\/li>\n\n\n\n

  10. Rice & Beans<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    here is a burger I made<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    Many of these songs were written in the last two years, but \u201cMustard-Cooked Smashburger with Grilled Onions & Mushrooms\u201d was started as two separate ideas way back in high school. Pinch Hitter<\/a> frontman Spencer Blake<\/a> and I were messing around with a chord progression (we were in a band together back then, IYKYK). He\u2019d written the first four chords, and I suggested the next two, I think. It\u2019s fuzzy, how we got to the last two. I moved to Chicago before we could finish that song, but Spencer and Brendan\u2019s next project, The House In The Hole Of The Side Of The Tree, took those eight chords and put them in a pretty sick song. I\u2019ve been confident I had a different enough take that was pretty cool, stretching that progression into a 16-chord solo section. Anyway, that\u2019s the end of \u201cMustard-Cooked Smashburger with Grilled Onions & Mushrooms.\u201d The beginning section is a bass line I wrote at age 16 while watching Ocean\u2019s 11<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cAl Pastor with Cilantro & Onions\u201d is my attempt to write a HIT EM track. HIT EM is a type of music that came to electronic musician Drew Daniel in a dream<\/a>. \u201c\u2026what distinguishes the genre is that it’s always in a 5\/4 time signature at 212 beats per minute and features very crunched-out, distorted sounds,\u201d Daniel told NPR<\/em>. Writing HIT EM songs is very hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you play a muted cornet or marimba and want to record a solo over \u201cRice & Beans,\u201d the key is E flat minor and then E flat major. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    an al pastor and carne asada taco plate I got last summer at some sort of church function in Rogers Park that I stumbled on after kayaking<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    Hey Chris, why\u2019d you name the album <\/strong>Burgers Or Tacos?<\/a><\/strong><\/em> Is each song supposed to say something about each food?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is no special meaning behind any of the songs. The closest I got to that type of thinking is using a harmonic minor scale (\u201cthe spicy scale!\u201d your corniest music teacher says) on \u201cAl Pastor with Cilantro & Onions.\u201d I named these tracks these things because burgers and tacos are my favorite types of food. Mallory and I treat ourselves to takeout every Saturday, and more often than not, if she asks me what I want, I say, \u201cidk, uh, burgers or tacos?\u201d Did you know that you can name instrumental songs whatever you want? It feels like everyone names their songs so seriously, things like \u201cEnvision<\/a>\u201d or various water words<\/a> or God forbid quoting dead poets<\/a>. I wanted to do a tribute to the best foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Just have fun out there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
