Let’s see, I first heard “Landslide” when my friend Jonathan (more like my friend’s older brother’s friend, but still) covered it at a school talent show. That is a perfect song. *checks notes* WAIT A SECOND. Okay. No “Landslide” to look forward to. That’s fine. I first heard of Stevie Nicks thanks to Joan Cusack in School Of Rock (side note: watched that movie with my kid the other day, and it holds up). I first heard “Go Your Own Way” in a commercial sometime in the last three years. The two biggest pushes, however, were: 1) an Adam Tod Brown article from like 12 years ago on Cracked.com talking about how Lindsey Buckingham is a guitar god in ways not enough people give him credit for, and 2) Brendan saying this is one of the best albums ever made.

I’m not sure why I’ve never listened to it all the way through, but I am not kidding when I say that this album is the reason for this column series. Honestly, I might keep this column series going for as long as the blog exists. It’s fun, and it’s a good excuse to listen to music I’ve never heard. It is also my hope that you, reading this, feel a little more okay about never having seen The Godfather or Casablanca or never having read Hemingway or Gwendolyn Brooks or never listening to Sade or Chaka Khan. Then, yknow—you’re supposed go out and experience that art.

TRACK BY TRACK

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac (credit: Fleetwood Mac)

As if this album couldn’t be more hyped, Apple Music slaps it with a 100 GREATEST ALBUMS tag. I’m a little nervous it’s been too hyped for me. Eh who has time to get nervous. Let’s go.

Second Hand News

Interesting opening song! You gotta really believe in a song that has vocals so early to have it lead the record. Personally, I have never had enough confidence in vocals to begin without some instrumental-based hook. Even weight of an anchor, which begins with a cover of a Bahamian folk song, has the instrumental hook of modulating to the minor key. All of this is dancing around the fact that there’s a certain square folk musicians quality to this song that prevents me from loving it immediately. It’s a solid track, though.

Dreams

Okay like the groove this one starts with! I assume that’s Stevie Nicks on vocals, since she’s credited as writing it? I get what Joan Cusack’s headmistress character was talking about. Sorry to Lindsey, who is a great guitar player and fine singer, but Stevie shoulda just been lead singer (he says with the unearned confidence of a baby trying out sprinting, a mere two songs in).

Never Going Back Again

Okay I’m enjoying Lindsey’s vocals here. Really like this fingerpicking, too. It’s a touch “guy who wears a waistcoat,” but then again, I’ve seen the album cover.

Don’t Stop

Okay, this is an objectively good song. It gets stuck in my head quite a bit. I’ve taught it before. But I gotta be honest, I do not care for it. Shuffle patterns often sound corny to me. I – bV – IV chord progressions are a tough sell, and resolving to the V7 is hokey. I’m sorry, everyone. I sort of hate the guitar solo, too. I am pre-emptively irritated about how much mental stimming I’m going to be doing with this chorus for the next week.

Go Your Own Way

This has the cheesy 70s harmonized chorus like “Don’t Stop,” but I do genuinely like this one. I like what the drums are doing in the verses. Love that chorus chord progression. Love the guitar break in the middle. Another one that will be in my head for the next week, and that’s fine.

Songbird

Great place for a piano ballad. Also a great time to say that I don’t know all the drama surrounding this album beyond “everyone was on coke and sleeping with/breaking up with each other,” but something tells me Christine McVie got the short end of the stick when it all shook out. If that’s wrong, lemme know. But she had some songwriting chops, even if I just trashed “Don’t Stop.”

The Chain

Interesting that this is the only multi-songwriter credit on the record. The guitar here is fun. Even in a post-Breaking Bad theme song world, I like this guitar lick. Too much open tuning and desert sliding can get grating, but the right amount is the right amount. I have heard this one before, and the chorus gets the heart pumpin. Bass outro is sick as hell. Yeah this song rules.

You Make Loving Fun

Yoooo listen to these harmonies in the chorus! 70s bands weren’t afraid of a danceable bass line. C. McVie with another strong entry, even if the hokiness meter is dialed up to mid-strength. That chorus rules.

I Don’t Wanna Know

Solid intro to a sort of grating verse. Let the syncopation live under your vocals! Slippery guitar and handclaps in the chorus are a way back to my heart, though.

Oh Daddy

Well for one thing I hate the title. And it’s that kind of minor key ballad that I mostly find cheesy rather than affecting—it’s that “Our God Is An Awesome God” minor key. Bass line is cool. Do I have to take back the nice things I said about Christine McVie? Nah, I’ve written worse songs than this.

Gold Dust Woman

What a 70s title. This track’s cool. A fine ending song, without too many hallmarks of a fine ender, either. It’s not an acoustic ballad or piano ballad, it doesn’t have a huge guitar solo with soaring vocals. It builds at the end, and that’s fun. Did Hole cover this song?

WHAT DO I THINK

It’s not that Rumours was too overhyped. There’s just a certain kind of Boomer folk-rock that I think other people like more than I do. A certain way the voices blend, a certain twang in the guitars that doesn’t totally feel like it belongs. If you’re making a barbecue rub, for example, it’s good to add somewhat surprising ingredients like cinnamon or celery salt. That doesn’t mean I wanna take a bite of ribs and think “ooh celery salt and cinnamon!” That said, there are obviously some solid songs and moments of genius. There are no bad songs on this album, even if there are a couple I don’t care for. Lindsey Buckingham is not just good at guitar, he’s incredibly versatile at guitar. That’s a good quality. Everyone’s making an effort. John McVie plays a nice bass, Mick Fleetwood does what’s needed on drums. This is still receding hairline music. I oughta check out the making of doc though. I oughta listen to the whole record again. It is good. Almost feel bad that it’s not revelatory to me.

Sorry you got an email,

Chris

“Yesterday’s gone / yesterday’s gone” – Fleetwood Mac, “Don’t Stop” We have arrived at the album that inspired this series.
