The Cure is a band I’ve always thought was cool, but never enough of my thing for me to pursue too much. As we’ll see, I also think all the bands I turned to when I was a depressed 16-to-30-year-old were influenced enough by The Cure that I kinda got the moods I needed with ever having to hear Robert Smith sing (I like Robert Smith’s voice). Still, this is a seminal band. Not the kind of band you completely skip. So today, let’s remedy that. Let’s listen to Disintegration.

Previous entries:

Naked Raygun | Pure Hell | Big Joanie | The Beatles | The Beatles | Black Sabbath | Hüsker Dü | Fleetwood Mac | Marvin Gaye

HOW I CAME ACROSS THIS ALBUM

credit: The Cure, Wikipedia told me to copy this for attribution: By [1], Fair use, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=14822011

Frankly? I asked Brendan “which The Cure album should I listen to for an Albums I Should’ve Listened To Already column” and he said Disintegration. Good enough for me.

TRACK BY TRACK

Man, every single one of these songs has its own Wikipedia entry. I do not have time to click on all that. We’re just active listening and vibing.

Plainsong

I think people underestimate how much of being Goth is engaging with child-like stuff. The opening windchimes, the kind of music box melody of the intro—yes, Goths spend most of their time thinking about death, but there’s also often this imagined past of blissfully running through fields or whatever. Every Goth has a Christopher Marlowe pastoral poem in their heart, and it’s been stomped into bones and blood by the world. Tim Burton’s movies are obsessed with childhood. My Chemical Romance is always going on about lost innocence. I don’t know, I didn’t expect a The Cure record to start of quite so major key, but it makes perfect sense.

Pictures of You

Blink 182 heard these bass chords and that guitar tone and thought “that’s what we’ll do when we want to sound serious.” That said, apparently Robert Smith played Bass VI on this song, which makes me even more interested in The Cure.

Closedown

I see why teenagers get into this band. It’s eternally raining on this record. I really do enjoy the things Simon Gallup is doing on bass. Fascinating drummer decisions by Boris Williams. Roger O’Donnell’s keys are always the right texture. And Porl (that can’t be right) Thompson’s guitar seems to have a real sense of theatrics.

Lovesong

Hey, I know this song! This song fuckin rips! Hell yeah! Can I say that I’m enjoying all of this mashing ones into one word? Is every poet I like just a The Cure fan? Probably.

Last Dance

This song, with the minor chords and droning, nearly-distorted but still chorus-y and reverb-y guitar—this is how I expected every The Cure song to sound. While I am super super into it, I am very pleasantly surprised by how the rest of the record has sounded so far.

Lullaby

Not the kind of angular guitar intro or grooving, danceable main riff that I would expect from a song called “Lullaby.” That’s a title for one of the first two tracks. This song is super sick, though. Really like those chords.

Fascination Street

Bass and drums here almost sound like a The Smiths song. Seriously, never let anyone tell you that you can’t play a bass with a pick. I’ve been doing a lot more fingerstyle lately, but you can groove with a pick. The guitar here is like a starter pack for how to write minor key riffs in the 1980s.

Prayers for Rain

I’ve been on an Ann Peebles kick lately, and she can’t stand the rain. Personally, I’m more in the Peebles camp. Man, the drumming on this record is really really cool. It leaves so much space for other stuff to happen. Each snare hit is so much bigger, because they’re not always happening. This is another “I expected The Cure to sound like this” song, and it is quite good.

The Same Deep Water as You

The best title on the record, for sure. It’s wild how many bands I have really enjoyed have been obviously influenced by The Cure. I swear people in the 90s and 2000s were just ripping The Cure riffs whole cloth and like, changing the key or something.

Disintegration

THE TITLE TRACK IS EIGHT MINUTES LONG man we used to know how to make albums. Definitely a Bass VI on this song, right? I can’t wait to get a Bass VI.

Homesick

Hey, we got a ride cymbal groove! We got some accidental notes! Some discord! Nice to add some previously unheard elements at the end. Those loud keys in the middle while Porl’s looping his little picking riff and Robert’s singing his little lyrics are really effective.

Untitled

Real good closing track. That’s a closing track. Nice work, The Cure. I think you could’ve titled it, but it’s cool, it’s cool.

WHAT DO I THINK?

Really cool stuff! I can say that I like The Cure now. How much I will be listening to them, I’m not sure. We’ll have to wait until the dreariest parts of the year to find out. This column posts at the end of October (intentional), but I’m writing it on a 75 degree in September. Hey, music is seasonal. I don’t listen to Cloakroom in the summer or Reyna Tropical in the winter. The Cure are cool as hell. There’s going to come a day when I want this record to comfort me. Thank you to Brendan, who said this should be the The Cure record I check out first.

Sorry you got an email,

Chris

“You were always so lost in the dark” – The Cure, “Pictures Of You” A fitting band for spooky month, no?
