Friday Links: Soft On Crime Edition

“We had been sailing for months. Salt in our sentences. We had been sailing—but the edge of the world was nowhere in sight.” – Ocean Vuong, “Immigrant Haibun”

You want stuff to read this weekend? What else are you gonna do on a Sunday, rake leaves?

PBS Origins on Black pirates, specifically, why so many pirates named Black Caesar?

The excellent K.C. Mead-Brewer has an excellent new story in The Rumpus about Rapunzel and the terror of moving to a new place, something I’m familiar with lately (plus I need a haircut): “Rapunzel House”

Blistering flash from Kathy Fish in The Masters Review: “Praise Rain”

Enjoyed this essay on superfluous character movements from Lincoln Michel: “Clearing the Clutter: On Removing “Trite Physicality” from Stories”

Behind The Bastards this week on why the rent is so damn high: Part 1 | Part 2

The midterms prove that voters know “tough on crime” is bullshit. The “crime is up” narrative drives me nuts, especially after some vengeful real estate dorks conspired against Chesa Boudin. It’s good to see progressive DAs winning elections. We can’t incarcerate our way to safety.

Afrofuturism exhibit coming to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Mal and I have been trying to get tickets any time we’ve been in Baltimore since it opened. Maybe we’ll finally get there sometime after March 24, 2023: “Afrofuturism: A History of Black Futures”

Another one for the Baltimore/DC homies: Zach Lowe on the Washington Wizards’ new cherry blossoms courts

More NBA aesthetics, this year’s City Edition jerseys are out. Why the Bulls ever do white jerseys is beyond me.

Never forget yr ol’ dad, kids:
