Friday Links: Anti-Capitalist Black Friday Edition

“The supermarket shelves have been rearranged. It happened one day without warning. There is agitation and panic in the aisles, dismay in the faces of older shoppers.” – Don DeLillo, ‘White Noise’

Few things in life make me happier than making a whole mess of food and having family and friends over to eat it. My Thanksgiving was spent with a mix of Tennessee family and Chicago found family. My kid’s old enough now that these traditions are starting to become fun, important, and “make sure the kid gets some good memories here.” Consequently, our day was full of warmth and love. Holidays aren’t always easy for people, and I hope you and yours found warmth and love any way you could. Let’s talk anti-capitalism:

  • Few things are more “opt out of capitalism” than being a musician after ~age 23. My best friend and writing partner, Brendan Johnson, is a brilliant musician who does it because his fingers won’t let him do anything else. His latest record, Satan’s Songs and Other Joyful Noise, is a hilarious take on hymns and Evangelical freakshow Christianity, sung with beauty, joy, and enthusiasm. Listen on the b & the nothingness Bandcamp or Apple Music.

  • My dear friend and old pickup basketball foe Julian Williams has a new art series, “Louder,” coming up. Check up on his incredible work so you don’t look silly in December on Instagram or at the IGNRNT Art page.

  • My mastheadmate over at Cotton Xenomorph, E. Kristin Anderson, aka The Poet Laureate of Yavin IV, also makes sick Lego jewelry. If you’ve been hyped for Andor, go get some earrings from YourWeirdAunt.

  • I stumbled across Lex Hunter’s art on Twitter this year, and am very fond of their octopus prints. They also draw Spooky and Skelly, a ghost-and-skeleton duo that once occupied the same body, but now occupy the pages of coloring books and wall prints. Check out Huntress Studios here.

  • I also proudly sport an Arturo Torres Allen Iverson print—always worth checking out his ArturoDraws shop.

  • Finally, better-known SubStacker is not only a great writer, he’s an excellent artist as well. I’ve got two of his prints up and would add more except it starts to feel like “serial killer in a David Fincher movie” if you buy everything some makes. Check out the Papi Shop here.

  • For the Chicago homies, Block Club released its shop local guide.

Fight capitalism always, but make sure your friends can eat.
