“She’d been utterly lost in the mist before, but she did not bother to consider what she’d do if she should lose her way again.” – Silvia Moreno-Garcia, ‘Mexican Gothic’
Whoops, where’d February go? It’s trickster weather season in Chicago, where we keep thinking it’s going to be spring but it’s not going to be spring. Don’t be Mother Nature’s mark and plant your annuals too early.
What I’ve Been Reading Lately
I mean, I didn’t finish and get through a whole other book since Wednesday. In leiu of that same picture of Mexican Gothic on my desk, here’s a video about Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
I don’t have a ton to add to what I said Wednesday (except to reiterate READ THIS BOOK). I will say that going in, I knew this would be kind of Wuthering Heights in Mexico thing that takes a cosmic horror twist towards the end. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ohhhh boy does it take a cosmic horror twist, and my God is it gross. It stuck with me so much I blurted it out to Mal, knowing full well how gross the twist is, how absolutely horrifying, just because it made my skin tingle in a way that gave me giggle fits. Not sure when horror started giving me giggle fits, but the “Gordy” chapter in Nope and the lullaby in M3gan are some of the hardest I’ve ever laughed at movies. The cosmic twist with the Doyles at High Place did that to me.

Please enjoy Erykah Badu’s home studio tour, the Badudio, which is exactly how you’d expect it to be. There’s talk of real gold teeth and infrared saunas and what Erykah got at her third Ayahuasca ceremony. There is a gothic novel to be written that is set in Erykah Badu’s studio. I am not the person to write it.
Not sure if I’ve mentioned how much I love SZA on this blog, but man, SZA rules. The production on Ctrl—I’m so jealous of the production on Ctrl, you guys. SOS is must certainly not a sophomore slump, that album rips and has a very fun album cover that moves on my phone screen. “Go Gina” is one of the smoothest piano lines written by human hands. Doing a stripped down version of that track with just bass is bonkers, and an absolute achievement.
I’ve linked Ana Vidovic playing Spanish guitar before, but that was a long time ago SO LET’S DO IT AGAIN. Here’s a different song, “La Catedral” by Agustín Barrios Mangoré.
As I mentioned last week, I’ve been randomly scrolling Audiotree sets looking for new music. I did not realize a band I greatly enjoy, Covet, had a set. Looks like it’s before their effloresce album came out—cool to see them in their early stages.
Lastly, the Elephant Gym set on Audiotree really goes. Brendan once described Elephant Gym as sounding like they had “unlimited creative freedom,” and I think that’s an accurate read of them. Also love the “how are you liking the US?” “it’s great, we eat BBQ and drink every day” exchange and the “well we hate practicing” exchange. What a cool band.
Sorry you got an email,
Chris
